Prospects are players with 25 or less games played in the NHL. If a prospect plays their 26th game in the middle of the season, they will finish out the remainder of the season with prospect status. In the offseason following the prospect exceeding rookie limits, the team must sign the player to an entry-level contract or release them. Prospects do not count against the salary cap until they sign their entry-level contract (in fantasy, not real life).
Example: Shane Wright plays 30 games in 2022-2023. He does not count against the cap in the 2022-2023 season, but must be signed to an entry-level contract in the summer of 2023 or be released.
Example: Shane Wright plays 20 games in 2022-2023. He keeps his prospect status in the offseason and for 2023-2024. He plays 10 more games in 2023-2024. He must be signed to an entry-level contract in the summer of 2024 or be released.
