After the conclusion of a player's entry-level contract, they become a restricted free agent. In the offseason, other teams may bid contracts for the player. Bids can be any dollar amount, up to 3 years. The contract with the highest bid value is the only contract considered (See Free Agency for bid value calculation). The player's original team will have a choice to match the contract and retain the player, or let the player go to the bidding team. If the original team declines to match the contract, they will receive draft pick compensation based on the average annual value (AAV) of the contract.
Compensation is as follows:
$0-$1,999,999: 3rd round pick $2,000,000-$3,999,999: 2nd round pick $4,000,000-$5,999,999: 1st round pick $6,000,000-$7,999,999: 1st and 3rd round picks $8,000,000 and above: 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks
If no team bids on an RFA, the original team may renew the player's contract for $2,500,000 for up to 3 years.
