Every team is allotted one Franchise Tag per season. A Franchise Tag allows you to resign an expiring contract at 1.5x the AAV of the expiring contract.
Example: McDavid just finished his last year of a 3 year, $10mil per year (AAV) contract. His team may choose to resign him to a contract at $15 mil for 1-3 years, preventing him from reaching free agency.
Franchise Tags can be traded, but only with an expiring contract attached to it. The FT can then only be used on the player it is attached to.
Example: Oilers trade McDavid (pending FA) with a Franchise Tag to the Red Wings for a first round pick. Red Wings now have two FTs, but one must be used on McDavid.
